Zhoushan Harbor Attack

ROCS Hai Lung Attack

ROCS Hai Hu Attack

Chapter Five

Warm weather spread across the United States. The Saturday was like any other. Smoke wafted from backyards with steaks, hamburgers, and hotdogs tossed on heated grills. Bursts of laughter rang amid the gentler background of conversation. The sounds of kids at play echoed throughout neighborhoods, competing with the chug of mowers and the smell of cut lawns.

As the day wore on and the afternoon sun smiled down on picnics and barbeques, the news coming out of the Far East started making its way through media outlets and social media. Although the war with China was never far from anyone’s thoughts, eruptions of laughter slowly turned to more serious discussions. China had attacked Taiwan and a full-on fight was going on.

Standing in the warmth of the sun, with the smell of steaks in the air, many found it difficult to imagine the air and naval battles that were being reported…a war underway a half world away. Slowly, people became glued more and more to their phones, some retiring indoors to see the latest news. Families who had loved ones serving overseas knew that the danger had increased and sent prayers of protection. Mothers, fathers, and spouses suddenly found it more difficult to breathe.

White House, Washington, D.C.

24 July, 2021

The sun that had risen over the Far East had yet to set on the East Coast. The warm, humid day was winding down. Families had finished with their dinners and were settling in their comfortable seats to watch movies or their favorite series. Some were starting to venture out for a night on the town or take in a show.

President Winslow knew that there would be no such relaxation for him tonight. Watching satellite footage show the dawning of a new day over the Taiwan Strait, Frank wondered what exactly had driven him to want to become President of the United States. It had been a dream of his for many years. But now, he was striving to remember the reasons he'd wanted it so badly. The rationale behind the drive was lost to him now. He supposed many dreams were like that. They took so much energy to accomplish that there was little left to enjoy once they became reality.

Sitting and watching Taiwan and China battle thousands of miles away for most of the day took something out of him. The fight with China was about to enter another dimension. And that was aside from the fact that North Korea was also about to erupt. He knew that the weariness he felt was nothing compared to the exhaustion it was about to become. Part of him longed to let China have Taiwan and the South China Sea just so he could get some rest. But he knew that couldn't happen. He would somehow have to drum up the energy to see this through.

He glanced at the clock…7pm. It was eight in the morning over the strait. Not much had occurred on either side for the past couple of hours.
